Window replacement is one of those projects homeowners put off because they assume it will disrupt the house for days. In most cases it won’t. This post covers realistic timelines for window replacement jobs of different sizes — from a single window to a full whole-home project — and explains what can extend a job beyond the standard schedule.
Single Window Replacement — How Long It Takes
A single window replacement in an existing opening with a standard-size unit typically takes one to two hours from start to finish. That includes removing the old window, prepping the rough opening, installing the new unit with perimeter flashing and foam insulation, and finishing the interior and exterior trim. By the time you’ve had a coffee, the job is usually done.
The exception is when the existing opening has complications — rotted framing, water-damaged surrounding wall material, or a non-standard rough opening that needs modification before the new unit can go in. Those situations add time, and we flag them during the estimate so you’re not surprised on installation day.
Whole-Home Window Replacement — How Long It Takes
A typical Rockford home with 10 to 15 windows is a full-day window replacement project. Most crews complete jobs in this size range between 8am and 4pm on a single day. You’re home for one day, the work gets done, and you’re left with new windows and no debris — we haul everything away before we leave.
Larger homes with 20 or more windows, or homes with complex bay and bow configurations, may require two days. We give you a time estimate when we schedule the job so you can plan accordingly.
What Can Slow Down a Window Replacement Project
Most window replacement jobs run to schedule. The factors that extend a project beyond the standard timeline are usually discovered during the estimate — which is why a thorough in-home measurement matters more than a quick phone quote.
Rotted or damaged framing. If the rough opening framing has water damage or rot, it needs to be repaired before the new window goes in. This adds time and material cost but is non-negotiable — installing a new window into a compromised opening creates the same moisture problem all over again within a few years.
Non-standard opening sizes. Most window replacement projects use stock or near-stock sizes. Truly custom openings — common in older Rockford homes that have been modified over the decades — require made-to-order units with longer lead times.
Weather. Window replacement requires the opening to be exposed briefly during installation. We don’t work in rain or extreme cold that would compromise the foam and flashing cure. Jobs scheduled in shoulder seasons occasionally get rescheduled — we give as much notice as possible.
Access complications. Second and third storey windows, or windows in tight spaces, take longer to work on safely than ground-floor units. We account for this in the schedule when we see the job during the estimate.
How Long Between Estimate and Installation?
After the free in-home estimate, most standard window replacement projects are scheduled within two to four weeks. Lead time depends on product availability for your specific window sizes and the current schedule. During busy periods — typically spring and early autumn — lead times can stretch slightly. We confirm the current schedule at the time of the estimate.
Same-Day Window Replacement — Is It Possible?
For stock-size single window replacements where we have the unit in hand, same-day or next-day window replacement is sometimes possible. Call (815) 854-8544 and describe what you need — if we can accommodate it, we will. Emergency glass replacements for broken or compromised panes are handled as quickly as scheduling allows.
